Historical Notes: The first public railway in Australia was located between Goolwa and Port Eliot on the South Coast of South Australia and was opened in 1854. Train was hauled by horsepower and the line  was built to a gauge of 5' 3" now known was broad gauge to distinguish it from the narrow gauge (3' 6") lines in the North of the State. A little know fact is that South Australia was the first to build a State owned steam powered railway in the British Empire - this was the 7-mile railway between Adelaide and Port Adelaide which was opened for traffic on the 21st April , 1856. Government lines rapidly spread out from the capital after this, and 109 years later we find the South Australian Railways operating trains on 1,650 miles of broad gauge at the end of June, 1965, comprised 71 steam engines in operational trim and 74 diesel electric locomotives.
